How to Optimize Server 2008 Enterprise

If you wish to be able to optimize your use of say your Server 2008 Enterprise, you should know the nitty gritty of troubleshooting and being able to avoid and detect potential conflicts of IP’s. Remember, if you want there to be better flow in your business, it is important to tackle difficulties while they are easy. That is a principle that is as prudent as it is wise.

IPv4 address conflicts are known to cause a lot of potential problems with DHCP. It is not possible for 2 computers on the same network to operate if they are sharing a single unicast address in their IP. If this is the case, you run the risk of both computers being disconnected altogether from the network.

You can intercept these IPv4 conflicts by observing the following:

First, Go to the DHCP console, expand the node for the server you intend to use, after which you are to right-click IPv4. Go to Properties as soon as you are done.

Second, as soon as you are in the Advanced tab, be sure that the Conflict Detection Attempts has a value that is other than zero  The value you input sets the number of times that the that an IP address is checked by the DHCP server before it is leased. Further validation is then accomplished through the process of a ping request.

Let’s say that a unicast IPV4 address has become the accepted IP for a class A – C series of networks. As soon as a DHCP client requires a lease be made, that is when the server DHCP culls from its list of addresses and renders the client a lease that is available on the IPv4.  It is a default setting that the server only examines the most current of leases to determine an address’s availability. It does not survey the network for this matter.

If the network is extremely busy, an administrator might give the IPv4 to another machine or an offline device may have been powered up with a currently valid lease. If the IPv4 misconstrues this as an unexpired lease, then there is now a conflict with the DHCP server that perceives it otherwise. All in all, just remember to program the conflict prevention and detection to a higher than zero value.

Just remember these things to make your use of the program easier. Remember, if you feel that Server 2008 Enterprise is the one for your SME, then go get it!
